This story is Part 1 in a series by the Hillside Banner, interviewing club leaders and sponsors to shed greater light on the clubs and what they do.
Hillside Banner: What is Student Council?
Mrs. Stuthard: Student Council is a group of kids that have worked very hard at putting spirit into Sylvan Hills High School
Banner: What is it like being in Student Council and do you recommend students and why?
Stuthard: It’s a great opportunity to be in Student Council, but you have to keep up with your grades and these students [who are in student council] do about 200-250 volunteer hours a year. They are hard workers, they love everything they do, but they do hard work.
Banner: What are some of the events or activities done with Student Council?
Stuthard: Student Council starts out the year with orientation for the school. They show students around and help the new students. Then they have a summer planning meeting. They just went on a team bonding event to top golf yesterday [October, 1]. They also work at Bear Fest all day long in the heat and help out in the concession stand. Their next activity is Homecoming showing. They work hard with events like Donuts with Dads, Moments with Moms, and also being in charge of the bonfires and many other events like blood drives, food drives, and making sure families get a Thanksgiving meal and Easter meal.
Banner: What teachers run Student Council and is it difficult? If so what are some struggles y’all have?
Stuthard: The head teacher this year is Abby Collins. Miss Stewart and I are helping her because we’ve done it for many years, but she’s taking over. So this year, we are just the helpers. It’s alot of extra hours, and we don’t get a penny. We do it because we enjoy our jobs and enjoy watching the students have a good time.
Banner: Would you recommend Student Council and how could student council change someone’s life?
Stuthard: You could probably ask any kid on student council how important it is to them and how they like to be involved with school and school activities. It makes school go by faster, and is fun for them so I would suggest any kid try to be in student council who has follow through. If you have a job you have to do it top to bottom. There’s no one who’s going to take over for you. When you flop, you flop.
