At the beginning of the second semester, administrators introduced a new hall pass system. This new system requires students to sign out of class using a QR code that all teachers have in their classroom. “This system will allow administration to track when students are out of class and improve safety and security during instructional time,” said Principal Tracy Allen.
Mr. Allen says that they want to ensure that students are not out of class too often. He says that this will be a non-issue for 95% of students but will allow them to track the 5% that need to be in class more often.
Many students have expressed that they are not fond of this new system, and that it is not fair. Others have said that it is a good idea and a good way to keep up with the people who skip and walk out of class. There are some students who are on the “no roam” list, and some of them have been leaving classes whether they are allowed to or not. Mr. Allen said “[i]t also allows us to track students who are placed on the ‘no roam’ list so we can have conversations with those teachers who give them a pass to leave the classroom.”
With this new system, administration will be able to find the students who tend to leave class for an extended amount of time more easily. Whether some students may not like this new system, administration feels that this is the best way to keep track of students who need more time in their classrooms.
