Prom is something all juniors and seniors have been greatly anticipating throughout the school year, although it seems the weather may have other plans. With flash flood warnings, severe thunderstorm warnings, and even possible tornadic activity, it is hard to keep an event such as this running. There is a certainty for thunderstorms and 25 mph winds during prom and there is a model that shows a system moving in around 11pm but the weather timing could change. Taking into consideration that the severe weather threats would take place later in the evening, Mr. Allen voiced the possibility of moving the prom time up to 5:30 and ending it at 9:30 to get everyone out before the storm rolls in. Students are stressed out with this possible last minute time change due to before prom plans already put in place.
“Please know that your safety is our highest priority,” Mr. Allen said. “If we have to bump up the time, I am aware that it may conflict with photography sessions, dinner plans, etc. However, I will make a decision based on student safety from the data that I gather in the morning. I apologize for any hardships that this may create for you, but weather events like this can not be predicted with certainty in advance.”
The weather is something that is hard to predict ahead of time. Because of this, Mr. Allen is doing everything in his power to ensure the safety of his students. He even discussed postponing prom to another date. Even with this being a huge inconvenience to students with photography plans and dinner reservations, if it will make a safer prom it is likely the best option.
