The Studies of African American Culture Club is a place where black history and achievements are acknowledged and cherished. So for this Black History Month, we decided to interview three students from the club (Michael Barker, Nia Evans, and Kamorean Matthews).
Banner Staff: “Nia, why did you join SAAC?”
Nia: “I joined because people don’t know about the backgrounds of historical figures and I wanted to educate people on the missing pieces of black history.”
Banner Staff: “What does black history mean to you?”
Nia: “What my people went through and the sacrifices they made to get where we are today.”
Banner Staff: “Why should everyone (even those with no relation to black heritage) celebrate this month?”
Nia: “Because we should celebrate and accept all cultures and it shows people our struggles and triumphs.”
Banner Staff: “Kamorean, why did you join SAAC?”
Kamorean: “I heard it was a great club to get more connected with the history of black people.”
Banner Staff: “So what does black history mean to you?’
Kamorean: “It means to me for us the show the past of what they went through and how it made us stronger.”
Banner Staff: “Why should everyone (even those who aren’t black) celebrate this month?”
Kamorean: “Black people have contributed a lot. History can teach us mistakes that were made and how not to repeat those mistakes,”
Banner Staff: “Michael, why did you join SAAC?”
Michael: “To learn more about our culture.”
Banner Staff: “What does black history mean to you?”
Michael: “Appreciating those who came before us.”
Banner Staff: “Why should everyone (even those who aren’t black) celebrate Black History Month?”
Michael: “It’s not just black history it’s American history and it’s something everyone should know about.”
Two upcoming events sponsored by the SAAC are the Black History Celebration and the Sneaker Ball. The Black History Celebration will be held, on February 28th at the Performing Arts Center. There will be singing and dancing. The Sneaker Ball will be held on March 8th and will have thematic elements related to black history. All students are invited!
