Humans of the Hillside - Josiel Galvan

With the soccer season starting up, it’s the 2026 senior’s final run on the Sylvan Hills High School soccer team. With this, The Banner would like to recognize one of the captains of the team, senior Josiel Galvan.

Galvan is an extremely energetic, talented, and eccentric person who can get along with anybody he is around. Galvan isn’t one to do many “in school” activities, so other than working on the yearbook and playing soccer, he hasn’t done much. However, he did participate in DECA his Junior year.

Soccer is something that Galvan is extremely passionate about and something that he has done since he was 7 years old.

“Last year I earned all conference awards,”Galvan said. “This year I hope to earn All-State. But what’s more important to me than that is winning, I hope even more to make state again this year with my teammates.”

Galvan’s favorite hobby to participate in is photography.

“Photography is one of many hobbies I have but it is my most prized one.”

Galvan also loves to play guitar and piano, sing, and has an interest in meteorology.

Galvan works at Outback Steakhouse as a food and drink runner, which he says is “a really fun, and stressful, job.”

“Last year I won employee of the year, which is great considering it was my first year.”

Galvan also says he enjoys collecting Pokemon cards.

This is his third year attending Sylvan Hills, he transferred from Lisa Academy to SHHS his sophomore year. One of his favorite parts about switching to SHHS is the fact that it is less strict than Lisa Academy, “It’s a lot more laid back and I appreciate having a more comfortable time while I’m learning.” Coming from his friendly nature, he loves to socialize, which he can do a lot more here at Sylvan Hills due to there being a lot more people than at his old school.

Since graduation is coming up soon, he has been finalizing his future plans, and he has quite a few interesting ones. He has been given an opportunity to model for an agency in Dallas, which he is very excited about. He has also been considering going into a trade while keeping Outback as a second job and “become a workaholic and invest my money to build a foundation. This option sounds best on paper but will require a lot of sacrifice,” but whichever route he decides to take, he plans on keeping photography in his life, and possibly even starting a business out of it. “I also have strong desires to just leave to a big city like Chicago or leave the country altogether to spice up my life.” Having a strong desire to build a story has been a big influence in everything he does, always wanting to leave behind fun stories and a legacy.

The most important things in his life that he cannot live without include Mexican food, chocolate, and music. He mentions that he didn’t always like Mexican food, but as he got older he gained an enjoyment for it and his favorite foods went from steak, wings, and burgers to chilaquiles, barboca, and tamales. Chocolate has to be one of his favorite things in the world, “everytime someone asks me what I want as a gift I always say chocolate.” Music is something he has a big passion for, he loves to learn how to play different instruments, and of course he loves to listen to it. “I love hispanic music, it’s awesome and I recommend it to everyone.” His favorite artists being Jose Jose, Los bukis, and Juan Gabriel.

Josiel has an eventful rest of the year coming up, so join the Hillside Banner in supporting him through his final season of Soccer and congratulate him on making it to the final year of high school!
