Mitski’s eighth album ‘Nothing’s About to Happen to Me’ was released on February 27, 2026 was a much anticipated album for this year, as her last album in 2023 allowed her to flourish as an artist despite her being in the music industry early 2012.
On its first day on Spotify it grossed over 1 million streams and over 21 million in the following week. As Mitski fans have been starved since 2023, they did not disappoint her by showing up to stream the album.
Specifically, this album is similarly to the works of her past album though it is unique in it’s lyricism. Something that Mitski never fails to accomplish. This album is a deep exploration of sadness, isolation, and abandonment. This is evident through the songs with lyrics such as “Cause I’ll do anything/For you to love me again/If you don’t like me now/I will change for you” from the song ‘I’ll Change For You” which is also the most streamed song, besides from the single “Where’s My Phone?” which now has about 2.5 million streams.
Being known for her ‘niche sad girl’ aesthetic, especially for the album ‘The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We’ that was released late 2023. This album is what Mitski is best known for now, as it made her more mainstream. Her most popular song ‘My Love Mine All Mine’ was the best song of the album. Fans were able to interpret this song into many different meanings which is one of my favorite beauties of Mitski’s music. Sometimes artists fail in making melancholic music relatable, but no matter what the song is actually about it is fairly easy for someone to connect their own meaning.
Though her works are all similar in theme that does not mean that they are all copy and paste lyrics from one song to another. Mitski has a beautiful way or taking nasty emotions and turning them into painstaking songs that can hit almost everyone in the heart at some point in time.
As this album sets in for everyone else I’m sure more and more people will come to appreciate it. It won’t be long until fans are at Mitski’s door asking for another album.
