After a long awaited three years, Olivia Rodrigo announces her third studio album titled “you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love” will release on July 12th. With fans raving in excitement Rodrigo released a single from the album titled “drop dead” this past Friday.
In typical end-of-the-world dramatic teenage girl fashion, Olivia Rodrigo delivers – once again – for all the girls in need of another high-energy love song. Though her single ‘drop dead’ doesn’t directly appeal to the albums title, it very well appeals to her audience. Instead of her heartbreak ballads, this song explores the excitement of a new crush and the infatuation she feels over it. One of the lines from the first verse reads “You know all the words to ‘Just Like Heaven’ and I know why he wrote them now that you’re standing right here” This line speaks to all the self-proclaimed ‘yearners’ who appreciate the Romantic prose of ‘The Cure’ in their own crush obsessions. To further the idea of her obsessive crush, a later line in the second verse she goes on to say “You’re so, so pretty boy I’m paranoid I made you up” Which is highly relatable, as a lot of her music strives to be.
Though Olivia Rodrigo is working with her usual producer, Dan Nigro, the first single sounds a bit different from her usual music style. The song starts and the listener is immediately thrown into calm synth-pop melody and low vocals. This album separates itself from her other works firstly with the purple branding for both of her first albums ‘Sour’ and ‘Guts,’ which also are only four letter words used for the title. Instead ‘you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love’ obviously has a much longer title, it also is using the color pink as it’s branding rather than purple.
It seems like Rodrigo is beginning to mature in the music she is putting out, carefully curating what she wants her discography to be. And though it will be hard for many fans to kiss the sad girl pop goodbye, many fans are immensely excited to see where this new style leads her music.
Howbeit none of the album’s other track names are released, fans are still counting down the days until release in excitement. Will you be tuned in on July 12th to see how sad Olivia is for a girl so in love?
