As fall settles in, the Sylvan Hills High School Quiz Bowl team is once again encouraging students and staff to come together for a good cause through its annual “No Shave November” fundraiser. The event challenges participants to put away their razors for the month while raising money to support The Compassion Center Shelter for Women and Children.
Participants began the month-long effort by shaving clean on October 31 and submitting photos to the contest judges. They will take another photo on November 30 to show their beard growth progress. Donation cans are placed in each participating teacher’s classroom for students and staff to contribute funds toward the cause. This year’s participants include: Mr. Harper, Coach Olberts, Coach Cagle, Mr. Belin, Mr. Lewis, Mr. Smith, and the sponsor of the event Mr. Pruitt.
Mr. Belin said he didn’t hesitate to join the effort once he learned about the purpose. “I knew it was for charity and wanted to help out,” he said. He added that while his beard has been “a little itchy,” he doesn’t mind. “Charity work is important and is easy if we all pitch in together.”
Coach Olberts, another long-time participant, said he enjoys the fundraiser’s mix of fun and purpose. “I’ve done it in the past. It’s fun and a good way to raise money,” he explained. “Trying to raise money for charity and promote men’s health awareness” is his main goal. He added that students are responding well: “The class that raises the most money gets an exemption.”
Both teachers mentioned that the challenge isn’t without its lighter side. Belin laughed about student reactions to his growing beard. “They’ve been joking at me about my beard, but it’s okay as long as they’re engaged.”
Coach Olberts agreed that enthusiasm makes the effort worthwhile—even if, as he joked, “It’s gonna get itchy.”
The event will conclude on November 30 when judges compare before-and-after photos. Regardless of who has the most impressive beard, all agree that the real winners will be those helped by the Compassion Center.
